Planning and Design

Urban planning and design plays a very important role in determining the health of the city and its citizens. Understanding demographics, population dynamics, locating various land uses to determine the stress levels related to work-life balance, access to important amenities like healthcare, education, and open space. Design of roadways, buildings, public spaces with a balance of green community spaces, active recreation spaces, determine the overall health of the community. It improves the air quality of the area, leading to well designed, well-drained, dust-free environment. To achieve this vision of a society, a complex set of variables need to be studied, measured, and analyzed; to be able to propose meaningful, implementable designs and technologies.

Policy and Governance

CUSE will focus on analyzing current policies for housing, education, health and economic development and propose modifications and innovations that can address the growing challenges in urban scenarios. In particular, CUSE faculty and researchers will study solutions implemented in JNNURM projects in controlled lab environments to evaluate their effectiveness. The Centre will also propose solutions that have not been implemented yet that have been developed through research at IIT Bombay in areas such as solid waste management, water management, flood mitigation, renewable energy solutions, etc. The Centre will research on implementable solutions and policies and enable strong governance and urban management through creating capacity building and training programs. Social and Physical Infrastructure

Due to unplanned and exponential growth of cities in world, immense load has come on the existing infrastructure for energy, transportation, housing, land-use, waste management (domestic and industry), water supply, rain water/storm water management, sewerage infrastructure etc To respond to these issues, an integrated approach with adequate data collection, analysis, and design development is necessary. Research for development of infrastructure which tackles urban challenges and improves the quality of life is one of the main focus of the Center. The Center looks into creating solutions for alternative transportation modes, land-use patterns, alternative and clean energy sources, energy-efficient housing, water infrastructure including drinking water supply and distribution, wastewater and sewerage management, stormwater management, flood modeling, and mitigation; solid waste infrastructure including review of household and industrial waste management practices, waste segregation techniques, waste to energy options that not only protect the environment but also generate revenues from waste materials. The Centre will also research the urban-rural relationship to understand the dynamics of urban poor and find solutions to control migration and create equal amenities for the urban poor.

Built Environment and Buildings

Built Environment refers to man-made spaces including structures, facilities, and features that support human activities. The built environment encompasses buildings, neighborhoods, urban spaces, and supporting infrastructure, such as water supply, transportation systems, etc. The Built Environment consumes a great amount of material and energy during construction, operation, and demolition phases. This makes it pertinent to address the environmental, economic, and social impacts of this rapid development. As the Built Environment impacts both environmental and human health - planners, architects, engineers, and designers need to carefully consider inclusive and sustainable practices. The Centre works towards discovering, researching, and implementing sustainable design practices in the built environment. The Centre also looks into research pertaining to Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), Day-lighting, and other Building Services.

There is a need to collect, assimilate and analyze data sets related to air quality, food, water, waste management and land use distribution and how they interact with physical infrastructure in a city such as the distribution of schools, hospitals, and public spaces, housing, transportation etc. Such analysis will be necessary to intelligently create smart and sustainable resource allocation policies and new modes of delivering services. C-USE will act as an enabler and inventory for such data and analytic capabilities by using existing and new technologies and by establishing relationships with various agencies and stakeholders to create a culture of exchange of knowledge and ideas.
